Missing modules?

Welcome back! A new academic year is here, which means new modules, new students, new teaching arrangements — and, occasionally, a little bit of head-scratching when something doesn’t quite appear where you expect it to.

If a module seems to be missing from MMS, don’t panic! There are a few simple checks that can help identify where the problem lies. This guide takes you through the most common things to check, whether you’re a student looking for your modules or a member of staff trying to find a module you work with.

First things first: can you see the module?

Before investigating why a module isn’t appearing, it’s worth checking exactly what you can currently see in MMS. The modules available to you depend on your role, your student or staff records, and the permissions associated with those records.

Both students and staff can view their modules through the My Modules portlet on MySaint or directly on the Modules page in MMS.

In MMS, you can check your modules by:

  1. Log into MMS.
  2. Select the academic year from the drop-down list at the top of the page.
  3. From the unit drop-down list, select either Show all to view all the modules you have access to, or select the School the module belongs to.
  4. Select Get My Modules.

Your modules will appear in columns corresponding to when they are running. For example, Semester 1 modules will appear in the Semester 1 column.

Students

For new students, it can take a little time for your student record and module registrations to make their way through the relevant systems. If you’ve only recently completed your module choices, your modules may not appear immediately.

For returning students, your modules should normally be available once your registration and module choices for the new academic year have been processed. If some modules are present but others are missing, this can be a useful clue when investigating the problem.

If the module is still missing, check that the module has been confirmed on your student record. You can do this through MySaint:

  1. Log into MySaint.
  2. Locate the Academic Advising portlet.
  3. Select View audit trail.
  4. Open the Module Choices section.
  5. Locate the module in the table and check the most recent value in the Action column.

The action shown will tell you what to do next:

  • Module not listed: The module does not appear in your module choices. Please contact your Adviser.
  • Module selected: The module has been selected but not yet confirmed. Contact your Adviser and ask them to confirm the module.
  • Module confirmed: The module has been confirmed and should appear in MMS. If you are still unable to see it in MMS, please contact the IT Service Desk at [email protected].

Staff

Staff can view modules directly on the Modules page in MMS.

If you cannot see a module, first check that you are looking at the correct academic year. At the start of a new academic year, this is an especially easy detail to overlook!

If the module is still missing, the issue is likely to be related to your MMS role or access to the module.

As a central unit, IT Services is unable to adjust staff role assignments in MMS. However, Unit Administrators are able to manage roles for staff within their School or Unit.

If you are missing a module, please contact your School or Unit administrator. They can check your MMS roles and assign you to the module if appropriate.

If you can see the module but are unable to access a particular feature within it, this is also likely to be a permissions issue, and your School or Unit administrator will be able to check your access.
